Abstract

Lung Cancer being still the most common visceral malignancy and accounting fo roughly one third of all cancer deaths, is associated with an overall 5-year surνival still below 10% despite all therapeutic attempts. This study presents the common as well as different biologic characteristics of the main types of Lung Cancer, namely squamous cell, adenocarcinoma, small and large cell lung cancer. The current tlιerapeutic classification into Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) and Non Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) becomes obsolete. An alternative therapeutic classification is proposed where lung cancer treatment planning is based on further characteristics than anatomic extent and gross cell type. This classification is based on proliferation parameters and biologic behaviour of each and every type of Lung Cancer. Thus, the proposed classification is discussed in order to replace the current and largely insufficient one.
