Abstract

From a study of 82 patients who underwent operation for biliary obstruction, we found that preoperative bilirubin values above 15 mg/dl meant that common bile duct stones were unlikely couse of the obstruction. Jaundice for more than 4 weeks before operation, bilirubin values greater than 10 mg/dl indicated a lower than average chance of postoperative resolution of the jaundice. The postoperative rate of decrease in the bilirubin values average 8 percent/day. This rate is not significantly influenced by the disease process, the lasting of preoperative jaundice or the height of the preoperative serum bilirubin value.
