The Effect of Physical Education Programs on the Development of Motor, Emotional and Social Skills in Children and Adolescents: A Review Study

Abstract

Students engagement in Physical Education during childhood and adolescence is of critical importance for their lifelong participation in physical activity. However, in the Greek and global literature, a variety of physical education school programs can be identified, which aim to develop the motor, social and emotional skills of children aged 6 and 15. The purpose of this review was to investigate in depth the impact of school physical education programs on the development of motor, social and emotional skills of primary and secondary school students, applying a literature review. For the needs of the review, the search was carried out in international data bases. Forty-two sources which included programs of Physical Education and investigated their impact to students were studied and used. The results highlight the beneficial impact of physical education. However, a continuous evaluation and publication of the effects of the physical education curricula and the teacher on student learning outcomes is required.
