The effect of a technology supported course for running events in athletics using new technologies and traditional teaching (blended learning method), in the cognitive domain in students, in primary and secondary education

Abstract

In this paper was investigated as a case study the effect of a blended learning course in the cognitive level of students in primary and secondary education in Physical Education. Blended learning occurs by combining learning with the use of new technologies and the Internet, with traditional methods. The lessons were designed based on the objectives of the course in the subject of running events in athletics and were enrolled in the curriculum of the course. For the part of learning online, two sequences of learning activities were developed for the Learning Management System (LMS) LAMS. LAMS was running in combination with LMS, Moodle. The research involved 68 students aged from 11 to 14 years divided into two groups, an experimental (n=37) group which followed the lessons with the method of blended learning and the control group (n = 31), which followed the traditional teaching. Both groups filled in an online questionnaire before and after the lessons, to diagnose their level of knowledge. A two-way mixed ANOVA showed that learning has occurred in both groups F(1, 66) = 11.931, p=.001, partial n2 = .153, but there was a statistically difference in favor of the experimental group (Μ=19.29, SE=3.52, p < .001), that shows the effectiveness of blended learning.
