Validity and Reliability of Coaching Competency Scale and Differences in Perceptions between Basketball and Soccer young athletes
Abstract
The aim of this study was to check the perceptions that young athletes have of their basketball and football coaches about coaching competency. This will be researched via the use of the questionnaire “Athletes’ Perceptions of Coaching Competency Scale II-High School Teams-APCCSII-HST” developed by Myers, Chase, Beauchamp and Jackson (2010) after being adapted for the Greek population. This questionnaire consists of 24 questions which constitute four different factors, that is to say, Motivation Competency (MC), Game Strategy Competency (GSC), Technique Competency (TC) and Character Building Competency (CBC). Overall coaching competency was determined by the sum of all the individual factors. The sample of this research consists of 299 amateur athletes aged 12-18(Μ=14.64, S.D=1.541). In particular there are 181 football players (Μ=14.54, S.D=1.364) and 118 basketball players (Μ.Ο=14.78, Τ.Α=1.774). As far as the four dimensions of coaching competency are concerned, it was found that basketball coaches portray on average a higher degree of competency in correlation to Character Building Competency (CBC) while football coaches seem to surpass their basketball counterparts in Motivation Competency (MC), Game Strategy Competency (GSC) and Technical Competency (TC). The results of this research seem rational because despite the various individual differences both basketball players as well as football players have generally evaluated their coaches’ coaching competency positively. This is reasonable for children who have been trained by just one or a very small number of coaches and apart from their relatively minor training age, they also possess few sporting experiences.References
